Steeped in more than 150 years of history, this captivating district provides an unforgettable exploration of Western Canada’s roots, blending traditional charm with modern-day influences.

A Storied History of Victoria’s Chinatown

Victoria’s Chinatown was founded in the mid-19th century during the Fraser River Gold Rush, which brought thousands of Chinese immigrants to the region. Originally, these immigrants settled in the area to serve the growing population in the colony of Vancouver Island. The first wave of Chinese people brought their culture, traditions, and food to the city, creating a lasting impact on the fabric of Victoria.

Despite facing significant challenges such as anti-Chinese legislation and racial prejudice, Chinatown thrived and continued to evolve, even as it faced periods of decline and revitalization. Today, the area stands as a testament to the resilience and strength of the Chinese-Canadian community.

Must-See Sites in Victoria’s Chinatown

While exploring Chinatown, visitors will encounter a fascinating mix of cultural landmarks, vibrant shops, and stunning architecture. Whether touring with a local company like Discover the Past or on your own, here are a few of the top attractions to check out during your visit:

1. The Gate of Harmonious Interest

Located at the entrance of Chinatown, the Gate of Harmonious Interest is an iconic landmark that marks the entrance to the district. Gifted to the City of Victoria by the Chinese community in 1981, this ornamental gate is a striking example of traditional Chinese design, featuring intricate carvings, bright red paint, and a welcoming inscription symbolizing peace and harmony. At the base of the Gate’s red pillars are two stone lions, in turn, a gift from Suzhou – one of Victoria’s sister cities – of the People’s Republic of China.

It is a popular spot for photographs and an essential part of the Chinatown experience – in the picture above, a lion dancer from the Wong Sheung Kung Fu Club moves his way through the gates!

2. Fan Tan Alley

One of the most famous streets in Chinatown is Fan Tan Alley, a narrow passageway that winds its way through the neighbourhood. As the narrowest street in Canada, Fan Tan Alley is a hidden gem filled with boutique shops, quirky galleries, and a sense of old-world charm.

Historically, it was a hotspot for gambling and opium dens, offering visitors a glimpse into a storied past.

3. The Chinese Public School

The Chinese Public School, now home to the Chinese Canadian Historical Society of British Columbia, was established in 1901 to educate Chinese-Canadian children who were excluded from the public school system.

This significant site in the history of Chinese immigration in Canada showcases the struggles faced by early immigrants and the importance of community efforts to create educational opportunities.
